Approach

I photograph weddings as fine art, from a studio in the Midwest. Valerie, my wife, works every wedding beside me as my assistant, which means there are two of us watching the room all day and very little that gets missed.

The pictures are made honestly. I work in available light, document far more than I direct, and finish with an editorial hand, so the result reads like a magazine story rather than a set of arrangements. The frames worth keeping are usually the ones nobody was asked to hold.

Outside the season we are raising our girls, and doing our best to keep love, family and friendship ahead of everything else. It is the same instinct that shapes the work: turn up grateful, stay genuine, photograph what is actually there.

The studio is in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and we travel worldwide for weddings. Wedding collections start at $2,700 and portrait collections at $450.
